Mitsubishi Motors is preparing to send a strong statement about the company’s future plans at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Spearheading their onslaught of modern SUV contenders is the refreshed Outlander along with the highly-anticipated Outlander Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) to the range.
Mitsubishi’s striking and modern profile is conveyed by the Dynamic Shield frontal design language incorporating a tightly curved wrap-around front bumper which strongly resembles that of a protective shield. The new front grille and bumper are flanked by LED headlamps and daytime running lights and anchored to a macho front skid plate.
The car’s sweeping redesign is echoed at the rear with integrated LED rear taillights and powerful bumper design. The Outlander PHEV is further distinguished by unique bumper extensions and side garnishes as well as two-tone 18-inch alloy wheels.
The comprehensive makeover extends to the interior through numerous trim options and stylistic upgrades. Chief amongst these is the new steering wheel with improvements spreading to the ergonomics and visual appeal of vital controls and information displays.
Under the skin the new Outlander benefits from a reinforced chassis and re-calibrated suspension settings. Enhanced on-road dynamic performance and feedback helps tackle roads with gusto while the fitment of improved dampening materials isolates passengers from outside noise, perfect for family and friends to discuss matters of utmost importance on the road.
Mitsubishi’s on-road running costs have been optimised by significant technical upgrades to the hybrid EV technology. An extended range solely on electric power is complimented by a smoother transition between driving modes. The interplay between the two powertrains has been measured at a frugal 4.95l/100km. This leaves you that extra wad in the wallet to extend economic benefit wherever you travel.
Highlighting the Outlander PHEV’s versatility is the option of a 100 Volt on-board socket, able to supply up to 1 500 Watt of electricity from the vehicle’s high-output batteries. A convenient solution for powering mobile electric equipment, such as a camp fridge or other appliances.
The updated Outlander is scheduled for South African introduction early in 2017. The Outlander PHEV is under further analysis for local introduction and is currently undergoing technical tests and a market demand study.
